Hoppy IPA Day!

We’ve been celebrating all week with St. Louis Craft Beer Week and the Release of Volume #1 in our Wood Series and now it’s IPA Day!
Fun fact: The amount (in volume) of Craft IPA sold in the U.S. has increased 282% from 2007 to 2012 (taken from The Beer Wench).

So Join us in the Tasting Room today as we revel in IPA Day with two of our phenoms:

Divided Sky Rye IPA

Rye IPA.jpgSerious hops up front – party in the back!  Pungent, floral, citrus character with a slightly spicy flavor and a full mouth-feel provided by the rye. Synergy at its best.

Alter Ego – Black IPA

Expressive, beautiful, dark, and exquisite — this beer infuses the dark malts with a shot of hoppiness that will make you smile.  A mind-blowing brew.

Be sure to share your photos and tasting notes on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc., with the #IPAday hashtag.  You can follow what others are saying on Twitter by searching #IPAday.
Have a wonderfully hoppy day!

Raise Your Glass to Lady Liberty this 4th at 4 Hands!

Come spend the holiday with us!  We have great beer, great food, and a great view of the fireworks!
The Fifth Wheel will be serving up some awesome barbecue and 4 Hands beer will be flowing.  Fair St. Louis Fireworks start around 9pm, so bring a chair and get ready for some 4th of July fun 4 Hands Style.
If your celebration is destined for other locations, be sure to drop by and fill your growlers with one, or two, or three...of our bodacious beers on tap – and grab a brew for yourself – of course.
Enjoy your Independence Day!  Cheers!

An Ode to Yeast

It's official -- Saccharomyces cerevisiae has finally gotten the recognition it deserves!

Oregon is the first in the nation to officially adopt a state microbe - and - you guessed it - they gave the nod to Brewer's Yeast (Gaston 2013)

Saccharomyces cerevisiae
now joins the Chinook Salmon, American Beaver, Douglas Fir, Hazelnut, and Western Meadowlark, among others, as the official representatives of the great state of Oregon.

Other states have tried to name a state microbe, e.g., Wisconsin proposed to adopt Lactococcus lactis (bacteria essential to making cheese), and Hawaii proposed Flavobacterium akiainvivens (a bacterium unique to Hawaii), but so far these attempts have been unsuccessful.

We think Oregon's salute to this unassuming unicelluar organism is really quite fitting considering its contribution to the state economy (2.4 billion dollar craft beer industry) and to the happiness of the masses (at least from our point of view).

So, last, but not Yeast (couldn't resist that one), given the importance of this single-celled organism to our livelihood, and to the pleasure it brings many, let's lift our glass to S. cerevisiae - State Microbe of Oregon - Cheers!
